Opening of the Liebig Centre for Agroecology and Climate Impact Research

On 12 May 2026, the “Liebig Centre for Agroecology and Climate Impact Research” (Liebig Centre) was opened at the Linden Environmental Monitoring and Climate Impact Research Station. The new centre is a collaboration between Justus Liebig University Giessen and the United Nations, in particular the Vienna-based Joint FAO/IAEA Centre of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture of the International Atomic Energy Agency. This marks the first time in Germany that a cooperation centre of this kind has been established, bringing together and strengthening international research in the field of agroecology and climate impacts.

The aim of the Liebig Centre is to better understand the impacts of climate change on agricultural systems and to develop scientifically sound adaptation strategies. A particular focus is on investigating biogeochemical processes in agroecosystems. This includes analysing the effects of increased CO₂ concentrations and rising temperatures, for example through long-term experiments such as the FACE system.

In addition, sustainable approaches to safeguarding agricultural productivity are being developed. These include innovative strategies for controlling agricultural pests and the use of modern biotechnological methods. Through close international networking, the centre promotes the exchange of scientific findings and supports the development of practical solutions for climate-resilient agriculture.

During the opening ceremony, the importance of international cooperation for sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture was highlighted. Representatives from politics, international organisations and research institutions attended the event. Trifolio-M GmbH was also present and took the opportunity to engage in professional discussions with partners from academia and industry.
